On the occasion of U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s visit to West Berlin on June 26, 1963, American and Berlin flags were raised throughout the city. The visit took place during the Cold War, two years after the construction of the Berlin Wall. The flags flying together symbolized the close bond between the United States and West Berlin, which Kennedy publicly reaffirmed with his speech in front of the Schöneberg Town Hall.
