The photograph shows the Berlin Wall from the perspective of the West Berlin street side. The concrete wall with barbed wire topping, erected in 1961, cut through residential areas and directly shaped the daily life of the population. Kennedy’s visit to West Berlin on June 26, 1963 was also regarded as a sign of solidarity with the residents, who were confronted daily with the physical division of the city.
