On June 26, 1963, the population of West Berlin received U.S. President John F. Kennedy with extraordinary enthusiasm. Dense crowds lined the motorcade route through the city, many climbed on ladders and barriers to catch a glimpse of the President. The visit took place in the context of the Cold War and was a clear signal of American solidarity with the divided city, two years after the construction of the Berlin Wall.
