In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany, where he was received everywhere by enthusiastic crowds. The photograph shows a motorcade with the presidential car, flanked by a motorcycle escort and densely packed spectators lining the street. The visit took place during the Cold War and served to affirm the German-American partnership as well as Western solidarity with the divided city of Berlin.
