In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin. The photograph shows a motorcade with motorcycle escort on an urban street, lined with densely packed spectators. Such processions through the population were characteristic of the entire visit and demonstrated broad support from the West German public. The visit took place in the context of the Cold War and the Berlin Wall erected in 1961.
