In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany. The visit took place under the sign of the Cold War and Western solidarity with the divided nation. Kennedy’s ride in an open car through densely lined streets was among the defining images of the journey. The enthusiastic reception by the population reflected the great importance attached to the American security guarantee for West Germany and West Berlin.
