On June 26, 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy landed in West Berlin, where the population received him with great enthusiasm. The distinctive building in the background as well as the characteristic airlift memorial point to Tempelhof Airport, site of the historic Berlin Airlift of 1948/49. Kennedy’s visit stood symbolically for the American security guarantee toward West Berlin amid the Cold War, two years after the construction of the Berlin Wall.
