During the visit to Germany of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in June 1963, tens of thousands of people lined the streets in West Berlin. Camera crews occupied specially erected scaffolding in order to capture the event for film and television. Kennedy’s visit occurred in the context of the Cold War and was regarded as a clear signal of American solidarity with the divided city.
