During his visit to Germany from June 23 to 26, 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy repeatedly rode through German cities in open vehicles, accompanied by security personnel and cheering crowds. The American and German flags are attached to the vehicle. The motorcades were among the most visible expressions of the enthusiasm with which the West German population received Kennedy. The visit took place in the context of the Cold War and the American pledge of solidarity toward the Federal Republic and West Berlin.
