During US President John F. Kennedy’s visit to Germany in June 1963, the population received the state guest with extraordinary enthusiasm. Residents not only lined the streets but also followed the motorcade from balconies and windows – some with confetti and paper scraps as a spontaneous welcome greeting. Kennedy’s visit took place against the backdrop of the Cold War and the construction of the Wall in 1961, and was regarded as a strong symbol of American solidarity with the Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin.
