In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin. Along the motorcade routes through the cities, the population gave Kennedy an enthusiastic reception with densely packed crowds and showers of confetti. The motorcades were a visible sign of the close transatlantic bond in the context of the Cold War and the construction of the Wall that had taken place two years earlier.
