During his visit to Germany from June 23 to 26, 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy was received by the population with extraordinary enthusiasm. Motorcades with motorcycle escorts and American flags proceeded through streets lined densely with onlookers, accompanied by showers of confetti. The visit took place in the context of the Cold War and was intended to underscore the solidarity of the United States with the Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin.
