On June 26, 1963, West Berlin received U.S. President John F. Kennedy with extraordinary enthusiasm. Hundreds of thousands of people filled the streets and squares of the city. The visit took place in the context of the Cold War and the Berlin Wall erected in 1961 and was a strong signal of American solidarity with the divided city. The highlight of the day was Kennedy’s speech before the Schöneberg City Hall.
