During his visit to Germany in June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy was received enthusiastically by large crowds. The photograph shows a motorcade with motorcycle escort and U.S. flag, accompanied by confetti and cheering spectators along an urban street. Such reception scenes characterized several stops on the journey and reflected the close ties of the West German population with the American protective power during the Cold War.
