In June 1963, the West German and West Berlin population received U.S. President John F. Kennedy with extraordinary enthusiasm. The photograph shows a densely packed crowd, which was observed at several stations of the visit. Kennedy’s journey through the Federal Republic and West Berlin had high symbolic significance against the backdrop of the Cold War and the construction of the Wall in 1961, as a sign of American solidarity with the free part of Germany.
