In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany to affirm the transatlantic partnership in the context of the Cold War. The photograph shows Kennedy at a lectern with multiple microphones during a public address. The visit was prompted by the tense situation following the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961; Kennedy signaled to the West German population the continued support of the United States.
