During U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s visit to Germany in June 1963, large crowds lined the streets and public squares in many places. The population received Kennedy with extraordinary enthusiasm. The visit took place against the backdrop of the Cold War and the Berlin Wall, which had been erected two years earlier, and was regarded as a powerful symbol of Western solidarity.
