In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin. The official reception was accompanied at several stops by military honor guards and brass bands. The image shows a uniformed tuba player from such an ensemble; film cameras in the background attest to the intensive media presence of the state visit. In the context of the Cold War, the visit was a strong symbol of American solidarity with the Federal Republic.
