On the occasion of the state visit by U.S. President John F. Kennedy to the Federal Republic of Germany (June 23–26, 1963), the official receptions and events were accompanied musically by military and police bands. The visible street sign bearing the inscription ’17 Juni’ refers to the commemoration of the popular uprising in the German Democratic Republic on June 17, 1953, which was regarded in the West as a symbol of the will for freedom. Kennedy’s visit took place against the backdrop of the Cold War and the construction of the Wall in 1961 and was a strong sign of American solidarity with the Federal Republic and West Berlin.
