In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin. The photograph shows Kennedy speaking at a lectern with several microphones, accompanied by delegation members. The visit took place in the context of the Cold War and served to reaffirm American support for West Germany and West Berlin, which had been under particular pressure since the construction of the Wall in 1961.
