During his visit to Germany from June 23 to 26, 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy was received by large crowds. A sign in the crowd bearing the inscription “June 17” refers to the Day of German Unity, which during the Cold War served as a political symbol for the division of Germany. Kennedy’s visit was regarded as a strong sign of American solidarity with the Federal Republic and West Berlin, whose population had been under particular pressure since the construction of the Wall in 1961.
