US President John F. Kennedy visited Germany from June 23 to 26, 1963—one of the most significant diplomatic journeys of the Cold War. The photograph shows Kennedy delivering remarks at microphones, surrounded by companions and press photographers. The visit was regarded as a strong signal of American solidarity with the Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin, two years after the construction of the Berlin Wall.
