Aerial photograph of the Brandenburg Gate in West Berlin, taken during the visit to Germany of U.S. President John F. Kennedy on June 26, 1963. Clearly visible is the Berlin Wall, erected since 1961, which seals off the gate from the western part of the city. The Brandenburg Gate, which had been draped with red curtains from the East German side during Kennedy’s visit, stood symbolically for the division of Germany during the Cold War.
