Urban photograph of the Kurfürstendamm in West Berlin with the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, whose ruined tower had been preserved as a memorial to World War II. The image was created in the context of U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s visit to Germany in June 1963. West Berlin was at that time a central site of the Cold War; the construction of the Wall in 1961 had definitively divided the city. Kennedy’s visit on June 26, 1963 was regarded as a symbol of American solidarity with the besieged city.
