In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin. Along the routes of travel, hundreds of thousands of people lined the streets to see the American President. The spontaneous enthusiasm of the population was regarded as visible evidence of close German-American solidarity during the Cold War. The visit was marked by Western solidarity in the face of the Soviet threat and the construction of the Wall erected in 1961.
