In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin in the context of the Cold War. The photograph shows Kennedy on a decorated platform, beside him the Governing Mayor of West Berlin, Willy Brandt. The visit was regarded as a strong symbol of American solidarity with West Berlin, two years after the construction of the Berlin Wall.
