In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin. The photograph shows an official speaking scene in which Kennedy stands at a microphone podium, flanked by Chancellor Konrad Adenauer and Governing Mayor Willy Brandt. The visit was a central event of the Cold War and served to visibly reaffirm the American security guarantee for West Germany and West Berlin, two years after the construction of the Berlin Wall.
