In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin. The photograph shows a speaker’s podium on a platform, surrounded by a large, densely packed crowd. The visit took place in the context of the Cold War and was intended to demonstrate American solidarity with its Western allies, particularly West Berlin. Along the entire route of travel, the population received Kennedy with extraordinary enthusiasm.
