The Freedom Bell in the tower of the Schöneberg City Hall is a symbol of Western solidarity with West Berlin. It was presented in 1950 as a gift from the American people and has since rung as a symbol against the Soviet threat. On the occasion of Kennedy’s visit on June 26, 1963 and his speech in front of City Hall, the bell took on special symbolic significance.
