Jack Lieb filmed the ruins of Berlin in 1945 as the final section of his color film report “D-Day to Germany.” Berlin had suffered severe destruction by the end of the war through years of Allied air raids and the concluding Soviet offensive in April/May 1945; large sections of the city center lay in ruins. Lieb’s color footage ranks among the rare contemporary color documents of this destruction, as corresponding material from Berlin in 1945 survives almost exclusively in black and white.
