Berlin 1945: Following Allied bombing raids and the concluding battle for the city, large sections of Berlin lay in ruins. Lieb’s color footage from this section of his film documents the condition of the destroyed capital after German surrender. Civilians—including women—began immediately after the war’s end with the removal of rubble and debris, an early step in the arduous reconstruction. This sequence forms the closing section of Lieb’s film, which leads from D-Day into defeated Germany.
