A large pile of rubble dominates the scene at Maximiliansplatz. Rubble and broken stones lie scattered around, a silent witness to the air raids that hit Munich hard. Behind it looms the badly damaged Künstlerhaus – its façade marked by impacts, window cavities yawning empty, the roof partially collapsed. Once a centre of artistic and social life, the building now stands as a symbol of the destruction left behind by the war.
