Siegestor Munich May 1945-2. The Victory Gate in Munich stands heavily damaged but still upright in May 1945. The monumental structure is scarred by bomb splinters, parts of the decorations are broken off and the roof shows severe damage. The inscription under the relief is partially obscured by soot and impacts.
Once built as a triumphal arch, the Victory Gate no longer marks glory, but the end of a devastating war – a memorial between the past and a new beginning.
