On June 23, 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy delivered a public speech in Cologne during his visit to Germany. The visit took place in the context of the Cold War and served to reaffirm the transatlantic partnership as well as the American security guarantee for the Federal Republic of Germany. Kennedy’s appearances in West German cities were received by the population with great enthusiasm.
