In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy traveled through the Federal Republic of Germany—one of the most significant foreign visits of his presidency. The visit took place in the context of the Cold War and the Berlin Wall, which had existed since 1961. Kennedy made public appearances at several stops and delivered speeches intended to underscore American solidarity with West Germany and West Berlin. The photograph shows him at a microphone podium during one such address.
