In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany—one of the most significant stops of transatlantic diplomacy during the Cold War. The photograph shows Kennedy at an official reception ceremony, presumably on the occasion of one of the arrival or welcome events during the multi-day visit. In the background, delegation members, security personnel, and military representatives can be seen. The visit served to reaffirm the German-American partnership and solidarity with the divided city of West Berlin.
