In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany. The photograph shows an official welcoming or farewell ceremony, in which an elderly dignitary—based on context, Chancellor Konrad Adenauer—is speaking, while Kennedy stands immediately behind him. Photographs of such ceremonies were taken at Kennedy’s arrival or departure during the various stops of his trip. The visit served to affirm the German-American partnership during the Cold War.
