In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin – a central event of the Cold War. The photograph shows Kennedy at a microphone podium during an outdoor address, surrounded by accompanying persons from politics and the military. Such ceremonial greeting or farewell scenes at airports or public squares repeated themselves at several stops on the journey that took Kennedy through Germany from June 23 to 26, 1963.
