On August 19, 1944, the French Résistance in Paris launched an armed uprising against the German garrison — the beginning of the multi-day liberation of the city (August 19–25, 1944). Jack Lieb captured these events in color as one of the few cameramen to do so, while the overwhelming majority of surviving documentation from this phase is in black and white. The liberation of Paris was carried out by Free French forces under General Leclerc in coordination with Allied forces; the German city commandant General von Choltitz capitulated on August 25 without carrying out Hitler’s order to destroy the city.
