On August 19, 1944, General Charles de Gaulle arrived in Paris while fighting for the liberation of the city was still ongoing. As leader of the Free French Forces, his presence embodied France’s claim to state sovereignty and the continuity of a legitimate French government. His arrival coincided with the uprising of the Resistance, which began on the same day. The complete liberation of Paris was sealed only on August 25, 1944, with the capitulation of the German garrison.
