On August 19, 1944, the French Resistance launched its open uprising against the German occupation forces in Paris – the beginning of the city’s liberation, which lasted until August 25. Simultaneously, Allied forces, led by the Free French forces under General Philippe Leclerc, advanced on Paris. Despite Hitler’s order to destroy the city, the German city commandant General Dietrich von Choltitz capitulated without laying Paris to ruins. Jack Lieb captured this phase as part of his color footage, which documents the liberation of Paris in August 1944.
