On August 19, 1944, the French Resistance launched an uprising against the German garrison in Paris—the beginning of the week-long liberation of the city (August 19–25, 1944). Lieb documented this phase as part of his advance from Normandy through Versailles to Paris. Despite Hitler’s order for the city’s destruction, the German city commandant General Dietrich von Choltitz capitulated on August 25, allowing Paris to remain largely undamaged. Lieb’s color footage from these days ranks among the rare color documents of the liberation of Paris.
