On August 19, 1944, the French Résistance in Paris launched an open uprising against the German occupation—the beginning of a week-long liberation phase. Jack Lieb captured this early phase of the fighting in his private Kodachrome color footage, while simultaneously the 2nd French Armored Division under General Leclerc advanced on the city. Hitler’s order to destroy Paris was ultimately not carried out by the German garrison; General Dietrich von Choltitz capitulated on August 25, 1944. The liberation of Paris marked, in the arc of Lieb’s film, the transition from the Normandy campaign to the Allied advance toward Germany.
