On August 19, 1944, the Paris Résistance began its open uprising against German occupation – the signal for the city’s liberation. In the following days, fighting broke out in numerous city districts between resistance fighters and German units, during which the civilian population also came under direct threat. Jack Lieb captured this scene as part of his reporting on the liberation of Paris, which ended on August 25, 1944, with the surrender of the German city commandant General Dietrich von Choltitz. Despite Hitler’s destruction order, Paris remained largely undamaged.
