On August 19, 1944, the French Resistance in Paris began an open uprising against German occupation — the prelude to the liberation of the city, which would last until August 25. Jack Lieb documented these days as one of the few cameramen shooting in color. The image shows Parisian civilians amid the turbulent situation in the city, before Allied and Free French troops under General Leclerc marched in. Despite Hitler’s order for destruction, the German city commandant General von Choltitz ultimately capitulated, so that Paris remained largely undamaged.
