On August 19, 1944, the Résistance in Paris launched an open uprising against the German occupation forces—the beginning of the city’s multi-day liberation through August 25. Jack Lieb documented these events as part of his color film material, showing the liberation of Paris in the context of the Allied advance from Normandy. The assault on Paris was led by the Free French forces under General Philippe Leclerc; the German city commandant Dietrich von Choltitz ultimately capitulated without carrying out Hitler’s order to destroy the city. The liberation of Paris marked a symbolically significant turning point of the Western campaign of 1944.
