On August 19, 1944, the French Résistance in Paris launched an open uprising against German occupation – the prelude to the liberation of the city, which lasted until August 25. While Allied forces advanced on Paris from outside, resistance fighters and German units engaged in combat within the city. Jack Lieb documented this phase as part of his color film report on the advance from Normandy to Paris. Despite Hitler’s order to destroy the city, the German city commandant General Dietrich von Choltitz surrendered on August 25, allowing Paris to remain largely undamaged.
