On 19 August 1944, the French Resistance rose up in Paris against the German occupation garrison—the beginning of a liberation operation lasting approximately one week. Jack Lieb captured this early phase of the street fighting on his private color camera before the 2nd French Armored Division under General Leclerc entered the city on 24/25 August. Despite Hitler’s order to destroy Paris, German city commander Dietrich von Choltitz surrendered the city largely intact. The liberation of Paris marked a symbolic turning point in the Allies’ Western campaign.
