On August 19, 1944, the French Résistance launched its open uprising against German occupation in Paris – the beginning of the city’s liberation, which lasted until August 25. As Free French forces under General Leclerc advanced from outside, resistance fighters and German units engaged in combat within the city. Jack Lieb captured this early phase of street fighting in rare color footage that documents the chaotic transition between occupation and liberation. Despite Hitler’s order to destroy the city, German city commandant General von Choltitz surrendered on August 25, allowing Paris to remain largely intact.
