On 19 August 1944, the French Resistance began an uprising against the German occupation garrison in Paris — the opening phase of the city’s liberation, which lasted until 25 August. Jack Lieb documented this phase in color while the Allies simultaneously advanced on Paris from outside. The Free French Forces under General Philippe Leclerc led the attack; German city commander General Dietrich von Choltitz ultimately capitulated without executing Hitler’s order to destroy the city. The footage belongs to the Paris section of Lieb’s film and is among the rare color documents of these historic days.
